Obsessions and love

It's funny how it's all come back to Lestat.

I was obsessed with the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles in high school, especially my Lestat. But, I've kind of forgotten about the books over the past couple of years. Anyway, I'm in a Senior Seminar on Gothic Fiction and we have to write a big 15-20 page paper. It can be on anything related to gothic fiction, so I figured I would do mine on Anne Rice. So I went to the library and got a shitload of books on gothic fiction, sexuality, Anne Rice, vampires, etc. Reading over all of this and reading over The Vampire Lestat again, I am suddenly reminded of my old obsession. An obsession that I haven't consciously thought about in a few years, but an obsession that (I realized) has emerged in other ways. For example, Vincent. Not that Vincent and Lestat are all that similar as far as characters go, but I'm obsessed with Vincent in the same way I was obsessed with Lestat. They both seem far more real to me than letters on a page, or an actor on a stage.

I feel like things come full circle. Along that same train of thought, when I graduated high school back in 2003, that summer Actor's Express did the play Hedwig and the Angry Inch. That was the summer Kayesha, Adam, and I became "groupies", going to see that show literally every weekend. (I think I saw it 32 times total...) We became friends with the cast. In a way, we almost became part of the show.

Now it's 2008, I'm about to graduate from college, and guess what show Actor's Express is bringing back this summer? Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I don't know if I'll be the obsessive groupie this summer, though. I'm still paying off the credit cards from last time I did that. Hehe.

But I look at these things much differently now. While I was simply caught up, swept up into another world when I read Lestat at age 15 or 16, now I can read through it and pick up on symbolism. I can analyze things, read them in depth. I can see through Lestat, and yet still get lost in that world. And I read Hedwig differently now, too. While in 2003, I was convinced it was a film about finding your other half, now I see it as a film about finding completion within yourself and--in Hedwig's case...also mine--through art. But this verse still breaks my heart:

Last time I saw you,
We had just split in two,
You was lookin at me,
I was lookin at you,
You had a way so familiar,
I could not recognize,
Cause you had blood in your face,
I had blood in my eyes,
But I could swear by your expression,
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine...

That's the pain
that cuts a straight line down through the heart
We called it love...

It used to be so simple. I thought that I would just find my other half, my soulmate, whatever. And that would be it. There would just be love and that would be it. But now, I think I have learned that I have many soulmates.

It's The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the moment where Columbia dances with Eddie and the guitar riff as he writes "Deny me and be doomed" and when Lestat says he wishes the reader was in his arms and when the heavier part comes in in "When the Sun Hits" and when Billy sings "I just want to be me, and when I can, I will" and when Thom sings "I want to live, breathe, I want to be a part of the human race," and when I sing "I will not be denied and doomed" and Sparkle cheers and when people use run-on sentences to describe things they really care about and when Bobbie played the guitar solo and we smiled at each other and when Justin and I listened to Jeff Buckley and when I drove home from Dallas to Beirut and it was the happiest music ever and "Let's find a bar so dark we forget who we are, where all the scars of the nevers and maybes die" and writing groups and hanging out with poets ang pagans and playing guitar in his white van and singing karaoke at The Corner and "Look in thy heart and write" and driving to Atlanta and "I must borrow every changing shape to find expression" random road trips to Memphis (And you wanna hold hands in the cemetery) and driving to Mulligan's with Dan going "what the hell are we doing?" and freaking out in the bathroom with Jessie before we played our very first gig and Marvelous 3 concerts with Ashley and Kyndal and letters with Sammy and you're my morning glory, tori and writing in my closet and "The more you ignore me, the closer I get" and hugging people awkwardly when they are crying or I am crying or whatever and driving away from auditions at which I did horrible, laughing, and making up songs about kitties and Sarapathy churning your sick lullaby and crying to "Creep" and people breaking up with me because i'm too intense and bumming cigarettes from Kayesha and Tammy and everything ever in life and having conversations with Frank and Julian and filling 60 journals and listening to Keane and The Killers and not giving a shit who doesn't like them and taking a bus to Seattle and DJ Epic and dorm rooms downtown and inside jokes that no one else knows about and "We will all go down together" and driving around with people just to listen to music and SQUISHING and "We're not the same, we're different tonight" and the incestuous group of friends and making the who has slept with who diagram (it's quite funny) and never watching Persona and singing mayonaise at the dive bar with the beautiful musician and My Brightest Diamond and falling in love with "Parabola" and "Do they know who we are?" and the futon of troubled times and !!!!!! rants when you should be sleeping and updating your livejournal or myspace or whatever even when you're 22 and potential job or school people might read it. (Well, guess what, this is who I am, and I don't care if you don't like it!) And everyone I love is my soulmate and art and literature and music and theatre and even everyone I have conflict with because they made me learn and they gave me experiences.

Basically, what I wanted to say is I love all of you, even if it doesn't seem like it.

Painted DVD, upcoming projects, video sample!

Hey guys! So, the Painted DVD came out really well. Thanks again to Louis and Tony, our friends at All-in-All Productions. Those guys rock. The play looked amazing on film, they indulged Rachel and I by letting us do our awesome commentary (hehe), and the documentary they put together was great! If you would like to get a copy of the DVD, again, let me know.

Also, exciting things coming up! My staged reading of Just Listen, the acoustic musical, is definitely going to happen sometime in May. I have a venue confirmed but haven’t confirmed a date yet, so I’ll keep everyone posted on that! I can tell you it will not be at KSU, though.

Also, Michael Tillman is directing Leapfrog, a short film that I wrote, this summer, and I’m really excited about that. To see a sample of his/our work, you can check out this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBBh84lwj3Y

That is a demo scene that he shot from a full-length screenplay I was writing entitled Marie and Emily. Considering he shot that with pretty much NO money, I think it turned out really well. Anyway, check it out!

Short film seeking cast and crew members!

Dark Room Productions, in conjunction with the Kennesaw State University Underground Theatre and Film Movement, the talent behind the recent hit play Painted, is seeking several cast and crew members for its upcoming film, Leapfrog, a short narrative feature by Sara Crawford and directed by Michael Tillman.

Leapfrog is a film that focuses on the character of Cameron, an 18-year-old "boy" who has just graduated high school and doesn't think too much about what he wants to do with the rest of his life. After ditching a job interview that his Dad sets up for him to go eat an ice cream cone, he is reunited with an old childhood friend, Lacey. The film follows Lacey and Cameron as they spend the day together swinging on the playground, driving around, and playing leapfrog like they used to. But when Lacey takes Cameron to a "grown up" party, he feels completely awkward and out of place.

CAST:

If you are interested in playing the lead role of Cameron, please e-mail your headshot and resume to leapfrogmovie@gmail.com. Auditions for this role will be Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28.

We are also seeking actors to fill several smaller roles.
-Two business men (30s-40s)
-Several extras for a party scene (late teens-20s), some with lines

CREW:

We are seeking several people to help out with production. Even if you don't have any film experience, we would love to work with you! We are looking for grips, an assistant camera operator, script supervisor, hair/make-up/wardrobe, etc.

Filming will begin in late May, and is anticipated to continue into late June, with a wrap hopefully no later than Sunday, July 6th. Production will be mostly on weekends.

Unfortunately, this is a very low-budget film, but actors/crew members will be compensated with gas money and food, and everyone involved will receive a DVD of the completed film.

If you are at all interested in helping out or being a part of this project, please contact us at leapfrogmovie@gmail.com.

Also, if you want to help me find people, please pass this information on to anyone who you think would be interested!

Yet another casting call, this time for a short film

Dark Room Productions, in conjunction with the Kennesaw State University Underground Theatre and Film Movement, the talent behind the recent hit play Painted, is casting a lead actor (age 18 – 22) to play the role of Cameron in its upcoming film, Leapfrog, a short narrative feature by Sara Crawford and directed by Michael Tillman.

Auditions will be held Thursday, March 27th from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, and Friday, March 28th from 1 pm – 5 pm, on the campus of Kennesaw State University. Filming will begin in late May, and is anticipated to continue into late June, with a wrap hopefully no later than Sunday, July 6th. Production will be mostly on weekends, and rehearsals will be every Sunday during the month of April. Exact dates will be given at the audition.

Cameron is very childish and doesn't want to grow up. The world is too much for him. Everything moves too fast. He is a very quiet and subtly emotional person, who has trouble taking everything in at once and struggles with keeping his feelings in check in front of the rest of the world.

Interested actors should send a headshot and resume to Michael Tillman at LeapfrogMovie@gmail.com. We will then set up a time that works for you to come out and audition. Actor will be given a free copy of the completed project, and will be compensated for gas and food.

Thank you.

Want to be in my next play?

I'm going to be doing a staged reading of my most recent play, Just Listen, an acoustic musical in April. I think I have all of the female parts covered, but I still need a couple of males. One of them should also be a singer. For the other one, singing is optional.

Rehearsals will begin March 15, and they will be on Saturdays. If you don't want a singing part, though, you won't need to be at all of the rehearsals. All of the rehearsals and the staged reading will be on campus at KSU.

This is going to be very laid back as it's a staged reading, but it's still going to be a lot of fun!

Let me know if you are interested.

New play

Hey guys! So I finished a new play called Just Listen (well, that's the working title for now). It's a musical (of sorts). Anyway, as a playwright, it will really help me if I can just hear the whole thing read aloud and get some feedback from everyone so that hopefully I can do a formal staged reading eventually.

It's going to be at KSU in the Burrus Building, Room 114.
Saturday, January 26th, at 3:00 pm. The play is probably somewhere around 2 hours, so we should be done by 5:30-ish.

So you should come! Read a part, listen, give me feedback, whatever you want to do. Constructive criticism will be helpful.

Scripts and snacks will be provided.

If you'd like to read over the script before the reading, e-mail me at scrawford85@gmail.com.

I wrote a new play!

Hey guys. I wrote a new play! It doesn't have a title as of yet. But it's a musical! (Sort of.) It's set in a coffee shop and there are acoustic songs that are being played throughout the play.

Anyway, I'm trying to organize a very informal reading, just so I can hear it, workshop it, and get some really good feedback. I need readers, though! Both male and female. There are several female characters in this one actually. (Don't worry, no one sings except for one character. And for the sake of the reading, I'm just going to sing the songs because it'd be difficult to teach someone else the guitar parts and the songs all for an informal reading.)

So if you are interested in either reading a part for me or coming to give me some feedback, let me know when you are available, and give me your e-mail address if I don't already have it. I want to make the reading sometime within the next few weeks. You can e-mail me at scrawford85@gmail.com.

Thanks!!

Writing group!

I'm starting a writing group. It's going to be very laid back. I'm thinking we'll meet every other Saturday. (I'm thinking Cool Beans, the coffee shop in the Marietta Square, but it could also be other locations.) I'm going to get an e-mail list going and we can all send each other poems, stories, plays, whatever we're working on, etc. And we can all give each other feedback.

When we meet, we can workshop pieces and someone will come up with writing prompts for the next meeting. The writing prompt person will rotate, though. I want it to be a very group oriented thing.

Send me your e-mail address if you want to be on the e-mail list.

A synopsis:

18-year-old Katie Rossia reviews topics from her own "environment" as
possible focal points for her upcoming valedictorian speech. Each
character in the play represents a possible topic for Katie as she
explores such American ideologies as, the concept of sacrificing the
few for the good of the many, from our population as a whole to one's
own family and neighborhood. Why do we often make the right choices
for the wrong reasons and vice versa? Why are people of great
affluence also of great influence in America? Why are transgendered
people (with the internal and intangible feelings and emotions of
both genders) treated as perverts by an overwhelming majority of
Americans yet people born with the reproductive organs of both
genders are not? Why do people, especially family members, "disown
and disinherit" their gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgendered, and
questioning family members?
